Patterns exist everywhere in nature, from the repeating hexagons in a beehive to the red skies at night calming sailor’s hearts. One of my favorite observations of old is, “When leaves show their undersides, be very sure rain betides.”

After days hunched over a garden bed full of weeds and shoulders sore from hoeing potatoes or too much sun, the upside-down poplar and maple leaves are a welcome sight. As dark clouds roll over the hills, or a curtain of rain passes across the pond, I’m ready to drink in the rest that is sure to come.

The other evening, I had been rushing from the grocery to the kitchen to the ballpark to blessed bedtime, and somehow, I’d missed the sure signs of rain. Wade and I settled in for a recap of the day and a rerun of our favorite show, and a breeze waved the curtains more than their usual caress…

Happy Feast Day of the Visitation!
The Lady Slipper or “Our Lady’s Slipper” symbolizes Mary’s happy trip to visit her cousin, Elizabeth. Lady slippers are a member of the orchid family. They’re perennials that come in a variety of colors, all probably much showier than Mary’s sandals were 2000 years ago.
“Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” St. Luke 1:42

“My little children, your hearts are small, but prayer stretches them and makes them capable of loving God. Through prayer we receive a foretaste of heaven and something of paradise comes down upon us. Prayer never leaves us without sweetness. It is honey that flows into the souls and makes all things sweet. When we pray properly, sorrows disappear like snow before the sun.” -St. John Vianney

Spilled cranberry juice never mattered less. 💚

God knows me and calls me by my name.…
God has created me to do Him some definite service;
He has committed some work to me
which He has not committed to another.
I have my mission—
I never may know it in this life,
but I shall be told it in the next.

Somehow I am necessary for His purposes…
I have a part in this great work;
I am a link in a chain,
a bond of connection between persons.
He has not created me for naught.
I shall do good,
I shall do His work;
I shall be an angel of peace,
a preacher of truth in my own place,
while not intending it,
if I do but keep His commandments
and serve Him in my calling.

Therefore I will trust Him.
Whatever, wherever I am,
I can never be thrown away.
If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him;
In perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him;
If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him.
My sickness, or perplexity, or sorrow may be necessary causes of some great end,
which is quite beyond us.
He does nothing in vain;
He may prolong my life,
He may shorten it;
He knows what He is about.
He may take away my friends,
He may throw me among strangers,
He may make me feel desolate,
make my spirits sink, hide the future from me—
still He knows what He is about.…
Let me be Thy blind instrument.
I ask not to see—
I ask not to know—
I ask simply to be used.

Winter was long, cold, and gray.
But now the snow has melted,
Icy frost has gone away.
Mama says, “We’re planting a garden for Mary.”
As a convert to the Catholic faith, I was slow to grasp devotion to Mary. I’d learn the biblical, historical, and theological basis, but my head failed to connect with my heart. I loved Jesus, my King, and I didn’t see how loving His mother would be appropriate… but then my dear friend really pushed me to pray about it. “Ask God to soften your heart.” It wasn’t instant, but gradually I started to see how, as a mother, I love my children more than anyone… more than anyone, other than God. Through the vocation of relationship, the giving of our days, our bodies, and our most sacrificial love, motherhood has always been a link to heaven—for me, it’s also been a path of introduction to the Blessed Mother. The fact that motherhood/families are being attacked today doesn’t surprise me (anyone remember the Flight to Egypt? Or that baby in the basket? Or Cain and Abel?). I’d almost scratch my head and wonder if Satan wasn’t coming after our families—a holy institution.
A GARDEN FOR MARY is my prayer for families to have a moment of pause, a moment of celebration of the beauty of God’s creation, and that more people would come to know Jesus through Mary. Amen. @tan_books
